Hot and Sour Soup

There are couple of ways to make hot and sour soup, here I'm just telling one of them,  for which it's easy to find materials, ingredients, etc., and easy to make...

Material: Chinese cabbage, onion (minced), tomato (cut into pieces, along with the juice present, which would make the soup taste better), carrot (cut into pieces), green pepper (cut into pieces), red pepper (cut into pieces), mushroom (torn by hand, into pieces), egg (one or two, without shell, kept into bowl after stirring, when egg white and yolk are mixed together), shrimp

Ingredients: cooking oil, soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper powder. salt, chicken essence.

Process:

Put pot on fire or heater, put little bit oil, when the oil becomes hot put the minced onion into the pot, fry it for 1 or 2 minutes, put tomato inside, then little bit salt and chicken essence... Stir the mixture, for 1 or 2 minutes... Put the mushroom, carrot, green pepper and red pepper, stir fry the all, for 1 or 2 minutes, then pour water into the pot...

When the water boils, put the stirred egg inside, you can put some water into the egg before stirring, so that it wouldn't become big blocks in the soup... Then put the Chinese cabbage, a little bit more salt, chicken essence, shrimp, and little bit soy sauce... When all the things are almost ripe, pour some vinegar inside, then stir for 5 or 6 times... Now the soup is ready...

You can also put some celery leaves as decoration...

Enjoy your food!

  1. Where's the HOT part?

I'm looking for the "perfect" hot and sour soup (which, due to difficulty in finding the right ingredients, is a double challenge). To me, "perfect" is hot enough to burn your lips off, full of interesting textures, and not overly thickened with corn starch (I like your recipe, generally, because I don't SEE any corn starch in it at all - or TOFU, which I really can't stand and shouldn't eat, anyway). I had a wonderful hot and sour soup in Hawaii, over 20 years ago, and nothing has measured up to it since.

    Still searching...HELP! :)

  2. Hi thanks for the appreciation! Yeah I just am trying to write something which is easy to handle, with some common ingredients or material, which people all over the world could find... Tofu? I like it very much, I guess just Chinese people like it, hehe... Hmm, if you wanna try real and original hot and sour soup, maybe you better visit China for tasting it... Good luck! :)

  3. Lots of people in the US LOVE tofu. I don't really mind it if it's in hot and sour soup, but would not go out of my way to add it if it's not essential. Also, I have some health issues that make it better to avoid all soy products.

I understand, though, that Chinese cuisine in China bears little resemblance to what Americans in the US think of when they think of "Chinese food." I had adventurous tastes (even liked balut just fine), but I'm not sure I'm up for trying all of the regional delicacies. Those preserved eggs, for one... but I think I'd rather try them IN China than in Houston, Texas - to be sure they're done correctly, right?

Maybe I'll make it to China one of these days, and it will be a fun adventure, for sure! Are you there, or in Finland? What did you think of Finland?

  4. It's not matter of doing it correctly or not, I guess it depends on the local taste, mostly Chinese food is adjusted for some local taste, to get more customers to come back to eat once again...

I'm still in Finland right now, but will visit back China once in a while, if you happenly come to China when I'm there too, I would like to be your guide :)

Finland? I'm in a town, and it's quite peaceful, with less population, less cars, fresh air, I like it :)

  15. This is Tomyam soup ( Thai hot and sour soup)! The recipe mentioned up there is not enough to make tomyam soup. You need to have lemon grass, kaffir leaves and tomyam paste. Please email me at nishah79@gmail.com if you need the recipe.
